How Can I Prevent Distracted Driving?

In a world where multi-tasking is praised, it’s easy for drivers to get distracted behind the wheel. However, it’s up to you to keep yourself and others safe while driving, which entails avoiding common distracted driving behaviors. Farmers offer the following tips to help reduce your risk of having a serious accident.

Keep conversations to a minimum

When driving with passengers, it can be tough to keep your mind on the road. Even having a conversation is considered a distraction, whether it takes place via mobile phone or with the person sitting right beside you. In this case, try to keep conversations to a minimum. If there is a serious matter to discuss, save it until after you reach your destination.

Get organized

Don’t leave tasks for when you’re already driving. For instance, set your GPS, adjust your radio, and make sure your mirrors are pointed in the right direction. Doing so while driving increases distraction, even if you only take your eyes and mind off the road for a few seconds. Also, don’t be afraid to make your car a quiet place. This will increase your ability to concentrate and allow you to react to unexpected occurrences.

Turn off your phone

Texting and driving is extremely dangerous behavior. That’s why it’s best for motorists to turn off their phones while driving, which prevents temptations to check notifications. If you need your phone for the GPS, takes steps to turn off notifications, or at least put your phone out of reach. Even hands-free operation can increase the risk of an accident.
