You Can Recover After a Divorce

A divorce can be daunting for a number of reasons. For many in Minnesota and beyond, the uncertainty of the future is something that weighs heavily on them, especially if the breakup is highly emotional. Some who are facing the unexpected turn in their marriage may fear they will never recover from the devastation and loss. However, new research from leading psychologists suggests that the chances of recovering from a divorce are quite high.

The media often portrays divorce as a key factor in future physical and mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety and high blood pressure. However, some psychologists refute this theory with statistics showing that about 80% of those who go through a divorce bounce back and lead happy, normal lives. Even those 20% who struggle following a divorce may not be able to place the blame entirely on the divorce.

Many of the subjects in the study already had mental health issues before the divorce, including major depressive disorder. Psychologists also suggest that those who are obsessed with their former spouses, refuse to accept the dissolution of their marriages or spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on the breakup may struggle to overcome the trauma of a divorce. However, even those who struggle can often overcome their challenges with professional guidance and counseling.

It is not necessary for Minnesota partners to remain in marriages that are unfulfilling, abusive or unhappy simply because they worry that the distressing experience of a divorce will be too much to overcome. With proper professional help, those struggling to recover from a divorce can develop a stronger sense of who they are and what they want to accomplish in life. This begins with learning as much as possible about the legal process and how to protect their rights throughout the divorce by consulting a skilled attorney.
